The Child and Family Support Project North East hosted a Pamper Day for families on Wednesday 13th February. 25 people came along to Chase Park Rehabilitation Unit in Whickham from 1-7.30pm, who kindly gave us their premises and staff for the day.
The hydrotherapy pool was a big hit, especially with the children. The beauty and holistic therapy room had a full stream of visitors all day and Melanie made a lot of girls very happy. No, we couldn’t persuade lots of fellas to have a go, although one or two did have a back massage.
Michelle looked after the Floatation Tank which was fully booked all day and some people had to be woken up to come out! It is very relaxing in there! Michelle also looked after the pool.
The two hairdressers, Natasha and Emma, from Chic Hair and Beauty, gave their time voluntarily and worked so hard all day, being the last to leave! Natasha Watson owns the salon in Guide Post, Northumberland and was happy to bring along Emma, a trainee stylist, and give their time and services to CBIT. They both commented that they really got a lot out of the day personally as well as enjoying themselves very much too.
Boda Gallon, Manager of Chase Park, organised a fantastic all day buffet and drinks and Bobby supervised this and her Health Spa staff throughout the day.
Vicki Gilman of Neural Pathways was on hand all day to offer physiotherapist advice and Elliott from Neural Pathways was on pool duty. Elliott will also be contacting all those who attended soon to obtain their feedback on behalf of CBIT.
Paul Saxon from BHP Law was available during the day to give legal advice. Paul also provided the PR Company for the pre and post event publicity and he organised the invitations and goody bags for everyone. Our thanks go to Paul for his support.
CBIT were also very lucky to have their first 2 volunteers at the Pamper Day to meet and greet families and generally look after everyone. Thanks go to Julie Daley and David Young for their time and enthusiasm.

CBIT North East are very pleased and proud to announce that Robert Smith-Johnson ran in the Barcelona Marathon to raise funds for the Child and Family Support Project NE.

The Marathon was on 2nd March and Robert trained vey hard running 16 miles plus per night. He has a very understanding family! His family will be supporting Robert in Spain and we at CBIT will be cheering him on, albeit from afar.

The first meeting of the North East Child and Family Support Projects Parent Support Group took place on Sunday 9th December.
The group met in Shearers Bar, St. James’Park in Newcastle and moved on to the Magpie Room Restaurant for a wonderful 4 course Sunday lunch. It was agreed by all that the food and service were superb and that this was an excellent venue.
Parents were pleased to meet one another and share their stories and experiences of having a child with ABI. There was a lot of enthusiasm about continuing to meet in 2008 and discussion about the best way to do this. Families completed a CBIT questionnaire to ascertain the types of activities they would like to take part in. A karaoke night seemed a very popular suggestion as we seem to have lots of budding performers. Sounds like a fun night for families!
People asked to have their contact details circulated amongst the group so that informal contact can be made and support offered between the families themselves. Julie will do this and send out the details. If any one else wishes to add their details to this list please contact Julie. If you live in the North East of England you may feel that you would like to be part of this group so please get in touch.
One of the first events of 2008 will be the Pamper Day at Chase Park in Whickham on February 13th. More details will be available nearer the time. Details of all Group meetings and activities will be posted on the website so watch this space.
The Newcastle office has received many emails and telephone calls thanking CBIT for the great Conference experience on 24th October at the Centre for Life, at which the Child and Family Support Project North East was launched.
I just wanted to reciprocate by thanking everyone who attended the Memory Day, especially those who helped me with my presentation ‘WE ALL CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE’.
I have received such a lot of positive feedback and felt that we achieved the balance in presenting to an audience of both professionals and families.
See you next time!

CBIT supporters attended the Great North Run on Sunday September 30th
cheer on Lottie Bell from Neural Pathways and ……
It was a perfect morning for the race, if a little hot. The crowds had gathered well in advance to soak up the atmosphere. And some atmosphere it was! Newcastle was buzzing and everyone we met seemed to be making their way to the race start. Sir Bobby Robson performed the honours – a very popular North East choice.
We passed Bart Simpson, Obi One Kenobi, several Scooby Doos, Batman, a couple of gorillas and cavemen to name but a few.
We were staggered by the number of charities represented and felt a great pride that CBIT had two runners supporting the organisation amongst the 50,000 participants.
Lottie Bell, although injured completed the race in a staggering 2hrs14mins and was naturally very sore and tired afterwards but felt a great sense of achievement. She raised the grand total of £314.50 for CBIT.
Having run the London 10K for CBIT in July this year raising over £1000 along the way, Owen Pugh took part in his biggest running challenge yet in the Great North Run. He raised a staggering £1156 with donations still coming in and completed the race in 2 hours and 38 minutes.
All this whilst studying for his A-levels. Well done Owen!
I would like to extend my thanks to the runners on behalf of CBIT, both for their commitment and for the money they raised.
I am very pleased to say that two more runners have already made a commitment to running for CBIT North East in next years race and the same two people are hoping to run for CBIT in the London Marathon in April 2008. If anyone can help with places we would be very grateful.
